Obituary

Sandra “Sandy” Schulz was born in Bismarck on March 27, 1950, during a snowstorm and passed away on August 8, 2021, at Elm Crest Manor in New Salem.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Friday, August 13, 2021 at Peace Church in New Salem with Rev. Joshua Eddy officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.   Lunch will be served in the Fellowship Hall immediately after the service and interment will follow at Peace Cemetery.

Sandy graduated from New Salem High School in 1968 as the Valedictorian of her class. She attended Dickinson State University from 1968 to 1972. Sandy was a member of the rodeo team in college. She formed many lifelong friendships while there. Sandy earned her degree in Elementary Education from DSU.

Sandy put this degree to work teaching initially in Baker, MT. It was after this experience that she decided she did not like teaching in a large city setting. She then accepted a teaching position with the Billings County School District from 1973 – 1977. She taught in a trailer house which doubled as a schoolhouse and her living quarters. This schoolhouse trailer was located on the Jim Tescher ranch. She then spent one year at the Tester School. From 1978 – 1987 she found herself teaching at the Fryburg School until she was re-assigned to the DeMores School in Medora from 1988-1994. In 1995 she found herself back in Fryburg teaching there until 1998. In 1999 she was again teaching in Medora until her diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis forced her to retire in 2001.

Sandy was able to work a few unique jobs in the summer as she did not teach year-round. Those summer jobs included: teaching migrant students in Fairview, MT as well as working as an oiler, operating a trackhoe. Sandy’s lifelong love of rodeo became apparent as she worked as a timer for the Aber or Brookmen Rodeo Contractors and timed at the Valley City Winter Show for over 25 years. She also timed the Home on the Range Rodeo for numerous years. Sandy was a lifetime PRCA cardholder.

Blessed to have shared in her life include her mother, Frances (deceased); father, Kenneth Schulz;  siblings, Bonnie (Bill, deceased) Woods, Jackie (Frank) Bickford, Wade (Linda) Schulz, Bert (Arni) Voigt, and Barry (Michelle) Schulz.   Sandy also was always surrounded by many nieces and nephews along with her cats, dogs, and horses that were part of her family.
