Henry Almit Breuer was born November 3, 1935, in Elbowoods, ND to Henry and Margaret (Beauchamp) Breuer. He was the youngest of 3 boys. He attended school in Elbowoods until his junior year and then transferred to Garrison High School. He finished his education in Sunburst, MT, graduating in 1953.
That fall Almit and Marlyne (Bayer) were united in marriage at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Garrison. They then began their lifelong farming and ranching careers at their permanent location. They started their family and had 3 children, Tom, Darcy and Karen.
Along with farming and ranching, Almit was very active in rodeo helping start the NDRA. He also participated in saddle bronc, bareback, bull dogging and team roping, winning many buckle and awards over the years.
In 1961, Almit attended the Billings Auctioneers School and held his license for 58 years. During those years he sold, farm, household and oil leases. He also sold at 5 different livestock barns for nearly 50 years. In 1979 he won the ND Auctioneer Association’s Livestock Market Champion Auctioneer Award. In 2007, Almit received maybe his greatest award when he was inducted into the Cowboy Hall of Fame in Medora in the Modern-Era Rodeo division. He was also inducted into the Indian Cowboy Hall of Fame. Almit was also active in many local groups and committees across the state.
Almit was tough as a cowboy comes, but he always had a soft spot for young kids who needed a little extra guidance and push in the right direction, and he helped many along the way.
Almit was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Peter and Bernard Breuer and an infant daughter.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Marlyne; son, Tom (Clarion) Breuer; daughters, Darcy (Greg) DeHaven, Karen Breuer; grandchildren, Ashley Brossart, Lacy Benfer, Eric (Kayla) DeHaven, Brittney Benfer (Vincent) McCauley; and 9 great grandchildren.
When Almit was about to be called home he was ready. He told his wife “We had a good run didn’t we?” Later he told Marlyne and Darcy, “Go get my horse!” Darcy asked, “Dad, you ready to ride?” Almit nodded his head and those were his last words. Now only a true cowboy would go out that way!
