Frieda Szczur

Frieda Szczur, 93, of Garrison, passed away on August 9, 2025.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Garrison, ND. Burial to follow at St. Nicholas Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 PM on Friday, August 15, 2025, with a Rosary/Vigil Service beginning at 7:00 PM, at Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison, ND.

Frieda was born on May 6, 1932, in Krem, ND, to Jacob and Katherina (Horning) Benz. She grew up and was educated in Stanton. She married Walter Szczur in June 1951, in Stanton, ND. Together they had four children. Walter passed away in January 1987. Frieda married Duane Rasch February 25, 2006, and he passed away December 2007.

Frieda was a member of St. Nicholas Church in Garrison, St. Ann’s Altar Society, American Legion Auxiliary, and Hospital Auxiliary.

She enjoyed summers at their cabin entertaining friends and relatives. She was very active volunteering in the community. She was kind, welcoming, and looked forward to entertaining friends and relatives. She loved her large garden and canning. Her flowers were her pride and joy.

Frieda is survived by her children, Gary (Sue) Szczur, Wilton, ND, Bonita (James) Metz, Litchfield, AZ, Wayne Szczur, Mobridge, SD, Michael (Letha) Szczur, Mobridge, SD; step-children, Kelly (Jennifer) Rasch, Garrison, ND, Peggy Rasch (Kim Norenberg) Oak Grove, MN, Darcy (Mitch Billings) Claus, Puyallup, WA; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Frieda is preceded in death by her husbands, Walter J. Szczur and Duane A. Rasch; parents, Jacob Benz and Katherina Link-Benz; sisters, Ida (John) Buxbaum, Emma (Frank) Burrell, Ella (Ruben) Sailer, Elsie (Milton) Buchman, Florence (Ervin) Jose, Irene (Joe) Victor; brothers, Henry (Lillian) Link, Emil (Ida) Link, Alvin (Minnie) Link, Iver Benz, Raymond Benz; sisters-in-law, Charlotte Schmidt Miller (Robert, Charlie), Mary LaBounty (Fred); brother-in-law, Julian (Florence) Szczur.
