Dorothy Lommen died July 24, 2021 after a brief illness in Brookings, South Dakota. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, July 29 at Charity Lutheran Church, 120 Aspen Ave., Bismarck.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Charity Lutheran Church, Bismarck. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m.
Burial will be held at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.
Dorothy Ann (Heyerdahl) Lommen was born to Carl and Anna (Sad) Heyerdahl August 30, 1933 in Walum, North Dakota. She grew up in Hannaford. After graduating high school, Dorothy attended Mayville Teachers College. She taught elementary school for a short time before marrying and starting a family.
Dorothy met Alan Lommen at a local roller-skating rink. They married June 13, 1954. They lived in several communities where Dorothy cultivated life-long friendships along the way. They spent most of their early married life in Dickey. In Valley City, Dorothy earned her bachelor’s degree. In the mid ‘80s, Dorothy and Al moved to Bismarck.
Through her various jobs and volunteer work, Dorothy delighted in interacting with people of all ages. In their retirement, Dorothy and Alan enjoyed wintering in St. George, Utah. She had a strong faith and was active in church and Bible study groups.
Dorothy was a wonderful mother of five children. She had a great sense of humor, never taking herself too seriously. She loved gardening, baking, shopping, reading and corresponding with friends and family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Alan; son, Kurth; sisters, Eleanor (Joe) Jordan, Margaret (Lee) Agnew and Barbara (Rich) Mahlke; and brothers, Eric, Earl and Charles (Martha) Heyerdahl.
Dorothy is survived by her children, Beth (Bruce) Holm, Elkton, S.D., Scott Lommen, Brooklyn Park, Minn., Jean (Don) Herauf, Dickinson, and Kristi (Gary) Houska, Grand Forks; daughter-in-law, Kathleen Lommen, Litchville; and many nieces and nephews.
Dorothy relished her time with her 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Each one held a special place in her heart. She will be lovingly remembered as a beautiful, gentle soul.
