Alice Joan Laumb, 91, Minot, formerly of Berthold died Thursday, February 6, 2025 in a Minot assisted living facility.
Joan was born on December 5, 1933 in Minot, North Dakota to Sigurd and Grace (Bemis) Ronningen. She was raised in the Carpio area and educated in the Hartland/Carpio area. When Joan was 5 her mother passed away. Her grandmother Alice Bemis came to live with her and Sigurd to help raise Joan and brother Jim. On October 22, 1949 Sigurd married Nora Smette. From this union Joan and Jim gained two step siblings Pasty and Michael. Together the family made their home on a farm near Carpio.
On November 28, 1950, Joan married Marlin Joseph Laumb in Berthold. The couple made their home on a farm west of Berthold, where they went on to raise a family of three children. Joan had two jobs mother and farm wife. Joan liked to stay busy to say the least. She could often be found running for necessities, whether it was groceries to make lunch to bring to the field during harvest, parts to keep the season going smoothly or helping haul grain. Joan was the gopher for all. Her and Marlin kept at it until his retirement in 1991.
When Joan had time, she had many pastimes and hobbies. She enjoyed being outside gardening, watching birds at the numerous feeders around her property, growing flowers, caring for the chickens she raised to butcher and sell, and mowing the grass in her never-ending yard. A chore that she and Marlin did in the winter was milking cows. Joan and Marlin would play Cribbage to see who would go outside to start chores. Most of the time it was Joan. Bingo was one of Joan’s favorite games, along with pinochle. She and Marlin would stay up late into the evening around the card table playing pinochle and visiting with friends.
Joan was a gifted seamstress. She sewed upholstery, made quilts and knitted and crocheted afghans. Many of the finished items were given to children and grandchildren. Quilt tops she had sewn for the church would be donated for overseas projects. Joan was the ultimate MacGyver where she could fix anything with a paperclip, shoestring or piece of tape.
She is survived by her children Thomas (Cindy) Laumb, Berthold, Gregory (Linda) Laumb, Berthold, and Barbara Shupe, Fargo; grandchildren, Brian (Kellie) Laumb, Jason (Margaret) Laumb, Heidi (Chris) Brown, Megan (Troy) Skalicky, Wayne (Kristin) Laumb, Carmen (Brandon) Boren, William (Maggie) Hoflen, Elizabeth (Jason) Wolff; great grandchildren Ellesen and Esley Laumb, Hannah and Eleanor Laumb, Avi Brown, Marlee and Lainee Skalicky, Catelyn and Rylee Laumb, Auria, Burke and Braedic Boren, Jameson Corry, Roger Hoflen and Ty Wolff; Step-sister, Patsy Anderson, Carpio; special cousin-in-law AnnaMae Laumb, Tolley.
