Loren entered active-duty service with the U.S. Army in April of 1967 and honorably served his country during the Vietnam War until April of 1973. He had received a bronze star for his service as a field medic.

After his discharge, Loren attended the National College of Business in 1973.  He received his degree in Accounting and Business. It was during this time, he met Deborah Olson.
