Syver Vinje, 73, Bismarck, passed away August 5, 2024, at the Sanford Hospital with his wife, Susan, at his side.  Memorial services will be on Friday, August 9, 2024, at 11:00 a.m., House of Prayer Lutheran Church, Bismarck.  The service will be livestreamed on the Bismarck Funeral Home website.

Syver was born December 25, 1950, to Dr. Edmund and Bernice (Skogen) Vinje in Hazen, ND.

He graduated from Hazen High School, UND, and attended graduate school at the University of SD.

Syver married the love of his life, Susan (Hagen) on August 22, 1970 in Hazen, ND. This month, they would have celebrated 54 years of marriage.

Syver held various interesting jobs over the years. One of his first jobs was at the Hazen public pool where he was a lifeguard and eventually manager while still attending high school. That’s when he received a hero’s recognition for saving a family of three, two parents and their young child from drowning. He was Manager of the Roughrider Inn (Hazen), owned his own accounting business, Chief of the Consumer Fraud division in the ND Attorney General’s office, Executive Director of the Workers Compensation Bureau, Financial Administrator for Vanderscoff Management Services, Financial Solutions, ND Securities Commissioner, and LAS Chief Financial Officer.

Syver was involved in politics for many years and served as state chairman of the ND Federation of College Republicans, a District officer, precinct committeeman, and member of the Republican State Executive Committee. In 1986, Syver ran for ND Republican Congress where he met and had personal pictures taken with President Reagan and President George H. Bush.  A highlight of the campaign was Susan and Syver greeting President Reagan when he came off Air Force One for the 1986 State Republican Convention in Grand Forks, ND.

Syver was a Past Exalted Ruler and Elks Trustee of the Bismarck-Mandan Elks Lodge 1199. He was also involved in many charitable organizations including Jaycees, Chamber of Commerce, Retail Trade Association, and Red Cross.

Syver felt his greatest joy and blessing were his family and friends who loved him dearly. He was always praised for his knowledge of any subject and his wit (over the years, we heard lots of Ollie and Lena jokes!). He will forever be missed by everyone.

He is survived by his wife, Susan; son Aaron; grandson Logan (Bismarck); sister-in-law’s Robyn Vinje (Fargo, ND) and Sharon Swenson (Bismarck, ND); aunt Harriet Skogen (Easton, MN) along with several cousins, nieces, nephews, and many special friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Bernice (Skogen) and Dr. Edmund G. Vinje of Hazen and brother, Ed Vinje, Fargo, ND.

In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to Camp Grassick % of the Bismarck-Mandan Elks Lodge 1199, PO Box 1596, Bismarck, ND 58502; ND Veterans Cemetery, 1825 46th St, Mandan, ND 58554 or the charity of your choice.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Sanford Health for the wonderful care given to Syver during his stay, especially nurse Alesha.
