Shirley Harmon, 88, Minot and formerly of Granville, died on Sunday, July 21, 2024, in a Velva care center.

Shirley Irene Hillerud was born on November 16, 1935 near Norwich, ND to Stener and Anna (Johnson) Hillerud. She was reared on the family farm in Norwich Township of McHenry County and educated in country schools prior to graduating from Granville High School in 1953.

Shirley married Harold Harmon on March 6, 1954 in Norfolk, Virginia where Harold was stationed with the U.S. Navy. Upon Harold’s return from the Navy, for three years, Velva, ND became their first home before moving to Granville, ND for the next 20 years. While in Granville, Shirley was employed as the secretary for the Granville Public School District from 1971 until 1979. In 1979 they moved to Minot ND where Shirley was employed as a medical secretary for Dr. Lutz from 1979 until 1997 when she retired. Shirley was a resident at the Edgewood Memory Care Center prior to her move to Souris Valley Care Center in Velva in July of 2023 where she remained until her death.

Shirley was the proud mother to Roxann and Randy, and a loyal spouse to Harold. Shirley and Harold were true lifetime partners. Where you saw one, you saw the other. Many times, it was in the stands watching their children and grandchildren at sporting events or traveling down the highway to Harold’s Navy Reunions.  Shirley was a phenomenal cook and baker.  She loved to put on the apron and stir up the best chocolate chip cookies, make an apple pie and roll out the lefse at any time.  She helped Harold in the yard and in their garden which produced all kinds of fruits and vegetables for her to cook with.  In her spare time, she loved reading, and spent many hours cross stitching dishtowels which became wonderful gifts for her friends, children and grandchildren. Shirley was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, the ladies’ aid and altar society.

Shirley’s loving family includes her son: Randy (Lisa) Harmon of Sun Prairie, WI; grandchildren:  Ryan (Kylene) Kraft of Velva, ND, Shelley (Jeff) Overbo, Elko New Market, MN, Reed and Anna Harmon, Stoughton, WI and Ross Harmon, Cottage Grove WI; great grandchildren: Preston and Mason Kraft, Kinleigh and Braelynn Overbo, and Beau Harmon; sisters-in-law: Maxine Harmon, Joyce Harmon, Jean Jones, several nieces and nephews and cousin, Marge Orth.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, husband Harold Harmon, daughter: Roxanne Kraft and siblings: Gwen Skarstad, Stener “Short” Hillerud Jr., Stanley Hillerud, and Doris Hiller.

A special thank you to all the care givers at the Edgewood Memory Unit and the Souris Valley Care Center for the patience and loving care received during Shirley’s residency at both facilities.
