Marlene Hanson, 82, Bismarck, formerly of Minot, died Thursday, June 13, 2024, surrounded by her loving family in her home.

Marlene was born August 19, 1941 to Rudolph “Rudy” and Thelma “Tolly” (Tollefson) Thorson in Minot, North Dakota. She was raised and educated in Minot, graduating from Minot High School in 1959. While in high school, Marlene met Rodney Hanson, and the high school sweethearts were married in 1959 in Minot.

Marlene and Rod made their home in many North Dakota and Minnesota communities, moving more than twenty four times, as they followed Rod’s career as a grocer. In 2000, they made Bismarck their home following Rod’s retirement. Marlene and Rod enjoyed wintering in San Antonio, Texas, for fifteen years until her dementia diagnosis in 2016.

Marlene was formerly an active volunteer with the Norsk Hostfest, Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch, and Salvation Army. She and Rod enjoyed traveling, most notably to Hawaii, Japan, China, Monte Carlo, and lastly taking in an Alaskan cruise. She loved listening to and watching gospel music performances. Most important to Marlene was her family; she was very proud of them and enjoyed spending time creating cherished memories.

She is survived by her husband of nearly 65 years, Rod; son: Terry, Minot; daughter: Rhonda (Paul) Ward, Bismarck; grandchildren: Kristina (Jarid) Ward Lipp, Shane (Megan) Ward, and Cody (Taylor) Ward; and great grandchildren: Nora and Wesley.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother and a sister.
