Sylvia Domsten

Sylvia Domsten, 84, of Minot, ND died Tuesday April 23rd, 2024.

Sylvia Ruth Peterson was born on September 9th, 1939 in Rolette, ND to Olaf “Ole” and Karen Malena “Molly” (Kittelson) Peterson. She attended grade school through high school in Rolette, ND, graduating from Rolette High School in 1957. Yes, the Statler Brothers’ song Class of ‘57 was her favorite! Following graduation, Sylvia moved to Minot to attend Trinity School of Nursing. Shortly after moving away to college, she met Marvin Domsten on a blind date arranged by her friend, Helen.

Sylvia and Marvin were married June 20th, 1959 at First Lutheran Church in Minot. They started their family with Randy in Minot and had a brief move to Topeka, KS for military duties. Upon returning to Minot, Janell and Shan joined the family. They all moved to Burlington in 1969. Doug joined the family in 1970, shortly before they finished building their new house. Sylvia and Marvin became charter members of Peace Lutheran Church in Burlington in 1980, and remained active members, serving in any area that had a need. As her children grew and started their own families and adventures, Sylvia continued her love of caring for other with a daycare in her home. She continued with daycare in and out of the home for the next 15 years.

Sylvia retired from babysitting in 1997 and took on the role of primary healthcare provider for her husband until his death in 2009, shortly after their 50th anniversary. Sylvia adopted and cared for her beloved cat, Flossie, in 2013. In her free time, Sylvia enjoyed reading, word search puzzles, visiting with friends, and spending time with her recent church family at River of Life Church in Minot. Sylvia also dedicated much time throughout her life sharing her love of cooking with friends and family. Whenever possible, she would teach her children and grandchildren how to bake or put a smile on someone’s face with a delivery of cookies or bars.

Her loving family includes: daughter-in-law, Rhonda Hartley, Minot; daughter, Janell (Mackey) Roy, Minot; son, Doug (Beth) Domsten, Orlando FL; grandchildren, Heather (Shane) Engeland, Greg (Samantha) Vannatta, Tylor (Morgan) Domsten, Ethan (Katie) Domsten, Holden Hartley, and Molly Domsten; great-grandchildren, Emily, Marvin, Henry, Arya, and Ezra; sister, Donna Lane, Lake Elsinore, CA, and many children from her time babysitting including: Susan, Megan, and David.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Marvin; children, Randy Hartley and Shan Domsten, and sisters, Verna “Gae” Hartley and Frances Scott.

Celebration of Life Service: Monday April 29th, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. in River of Life Church, located at 400 22nd Ave NW, Minot, ND.
Visitation: Sunday, April 28th from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
Interment: At a future date in Burlington Township Cemetery, Burlington, ND
