Richard ‘Rich’ Barlow

Richard “Rich” Paul Barlow, 45, Minot, died on April 2nd, 2024, at Minot hospital.

Rich was born in Stuttgart, Germany, on May 27th, 1978, to Danny and Manuela “Mini” (Sponaugle) Barlow. Rich grew up in a military family, spending his formative years in various locations including West Germany, Washington, Colorado, Tennessee, and finally North Dakota. He attended Minot High School and graduated with the class of 1996. Following high school, he pursued further education and obtained an associate degree in architecture from the North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton, ND.

Following college, Rich began his career at Minot Lumber, where he honed his carpentry expertise over many years. He then spent time working at Crane-Johnson, as well as engaging in numerous side projects involving carpentry and remodeling. In 2017, Rich embarked on a new chapter, founding his own company, Barlow Construction, where he worked as a contractor up until his death.

In 2001, Rich married Candace (Wolf) Barlow, in Minot, ND. Together, they created a loving home and were blessed with four wonderful children: Julia (26), Alyse (21), Aydan (17), and Keathan (16). His family was very important to him, and he loved each of his children dearly. Rich had a “whatever it takes” mentality to provide for the ones he loved. He also had a soft spot for his many dogs and cats.

Outside of his professional and family life, Rich was a man of diverse interests and passions. He enjoyed spending his free time camping and traveling. He often ventured to lakeshores where he enjoyed pontooning with friends and family; and also traveled to numerous beaches along the east coast. Music of all genres held a special place in Rich’s heart, but he had a particular affinity for reggae. He also took pleasure in collecting unique items and trinkets that caught his eye over the years.

No matter where he was, he could always be found dancing and laughing, as he made every moment count. Rich was a vibrant presence wherever he went, and was known for his infectious energy and outgoing personality. As the true “life of the party,” he effortlessly drew people to him with his warmth and humor. Rich was born “fast and furious” and lived his life that way. He was always quick witted and fun loving. It was evident to all that Rich knew no stranger and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. His larger-than-life spirit will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Rich came back to the Lord during the last few months of his sickness. His last wishes were that his family be taken care of and that his friends be saved from alcohol and addiction. Rich does not want anyone else to experience the pain and suffering he and his family have endured.

The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks and gratitude to all those who have been so kind and thoughtful during this difficult time. Your love and friendship have meant so much to the Barlow family. May God bless the memory of Richard Paul Barlow.

Rich is survived by his life partner, Candace Barlow; children, Julia, Alyse, Aydan, and Keathan of Minot; mother, Mini Barlow of Tennessee; sister, Michelle (Jason) Dean of Missouri; grandmother, Margot Sponaugle of New Jersey, and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

In lieu of plants and flowers, donations are preferred to the “Barlow Family Fund” at Gate City Bank in Minot to ensure that his children are taken care of.
