Jack Stack, 92, Minot, died on Wednesday, April 3, 2024 in a Minot assisted living center.

John Edward “Jack” Stack was born on May 4, 1931 in Roundup, Montana to Carl and Lydia (Gutschmidt) Stack.  He was raised and educated in Crosby, Harvey and Minot where the family moved in 1941.  He graduated from Minot High School in 1949 and continued his education at the North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton where he received specialized training in diesel mechanics.  Jack was drafted into the United States Navy on December 28, 1950 and primarily served his country aboard the USS LST 840 until his discharge on September 27, 1954.  He had been accorded the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal and United Nations Service Medal during his military service.

Jack married Yvonne Ostby on June 13, 1954 in Yuma, Arizona.  Following his honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy he resided in Minot, except for eleven years in Bismarck, and was employed by the Burlington Northern Railroad for thirty-nine years as a carman.  He retired in 1993. Yvonne died on October 11, 2016.  Most recently he had resided at Edgewood Vista since 2019.

Jack was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church- Minot, Brotherhood of Railway Carmen and a former member of the Minot American Legion Post #26.   He especially enjoyed gardening, upland bird and deer hunting, photography, taxidermy, breeding and training dogs as well as ice fishing.

Jack’s loving family includes his children:  Jana Stack of Minot, Jody (Louis) Eidenschink of Detroit Lakes MN and Greg Stack of Minot; grandchild: Elizabeth (Tyler) Peterson; great grandchildren: Reid and June Peterson; siblings: Dr. Robert (Libby) Stack of Redmond WA and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, wife and siblings:  Dorothy (Bob) Reinarts and Raymond (Betty) Stack.

Funeral Service:  Thursday, April 11, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. in the Thomas Family Funeral Home Chapel – Minot.

Interment will be in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery – rural Mandan later in the Spring.

Visitation:  Wednesday from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home – Minot.

In lieu of plants and flowers, memorials are preferred to the Souris Valley Animal Shelter, Our Savior Lutheran Church – Minot or the donor’s choice.
