Helen Zimmerman was born on May 16, 1932, in Fargo, ND to Orrin and Olga (Hjelmstad) Johnson. She died peacefully on Friday, March 29, 2024, in Bismarck with her family at her side.
She attended the Blue Hill School south of Ryder, ND.
She met the love of her life, C. Dale Zimmerman of Garrison and they were married on November 25, 1948. They resided in Garrison. They were married for 72 years. Dale died on December 20, 2020.
While raising her family, she worked as a Dental Assistant for Dr. Harold Stewart for a number of years. Helen and Dale operated the Garrison Dairy Queen for a number of years also. Helen was the Dietary Manager at the Garrison Nursing Home for 25 years.
She was known for hosting many family and Holiday events at her home. Once you got to her house, you sure were not going away hungry. Once everyone got together the discussion would always turn to her homemade donuts and caramel rolls.
Helen lived the last 3 years in the Bismarck/Mandan area to be closer to her granddaughters, Amy and Alison who where her talented and dedicated Care Givers.
Helen is survived by her children; Linda (Dennis) Fetzer, Rapid City, SD; Kathleen (Greg) Stomp, Cooperstown, ND; Ronda Tompers, Cascade, MT; and Kyle (Deb) Zimmerman, Fargo, ND.
Helen would always have a twinkle in her eye, when you would talk about her nine grandchildren, Chad, Peter, and Kristen (Tompers) Bruner; Dr. Candace Fetzer and Denise (Fetzer) Fonner; Amy (Stomp) Haugen and Alison (Stomp) Renschler; Roberta (Zimmerman) Green and Robert Zimmerman; 18 Great-grandchildren and 5 Great-Great-Grandchildren. Sister-in-law’s; JoAnn Zimmerman, Alma Zimmerman, and Sharon (Zimmerman) Eslinger and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers Harold (Helen’s Twin) and Ronald Johnson, sister Janice White and son-in-law, David Tompers.
Celebration of her Life Services will be held later in August at the First Congregational Church in Garrison where she was a very active member in her church circle.
