Ella Mae Cofer, 81, passed away on March 28th, 2024 surrounded by her loving family. The last few days of her life were most precious as all of her children were present and embraced her with the same love, support, and patience she had shown them all their lives. She hung on as long as she could to ensure everyone was taken care of, safe, and fed! A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 4, 2024 at 2:30 p.m. at the New Salem Auditorium. Burial will be held at the New Salem Cemetery.
Visitation will be held on Thursday from 12 – 1 p.m. at Elm Crest Manor, New Salem.
Ella was born on August 2, 1942. Because of her family’s military service, she lived in several states growing up. However, North Dakota was always home. New Salem was where she put down her true roots, raised her family, and worked for many years. She was a cook at Sunset, working for New Salem Schools, then worked for Randy’s Super Value, finally, she retired from Elm Crest Manor as a cook.
She married Eltor P. Bauer in Oct of 1960. Tragically, he died in 1967 after blessing her with two boys. This loss rocked her faith in higher power and love. However, she reestablished her faith in love, marrying Alfred Cofer in 1968. They were married for 15 years bearing four children. Eventually, Ella found her way back to The Lord and professed her love and belief while working to instill that same love of God to her children.
She enjoyed spending time caring for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her family was always a priority. Her amazing cooking is legendary and making sure everyone was fed is a family tradition.
She is longingly missed by her son Miles Bauer, Kim (Kathy) Bauer, Annette (Steven) Doll, Johnny (Melanie) Cofer, Shawn (Miranda) Cofer, Sandra (Daryl) Leingang, as well as many grandchildren, and multiple great-grandchildren. Her sisters are Rose Burrell, Betty Tappe, Ruby Hodges, Donna Hinricks, Shirley Munro, Lynda MCaw, and Debbie Tesfamariam.
The reunion in heaven, for Ella, was a joyous one for sure. Greeted by her parents Alexander Demontigny and Mabel Dionne Torstenson. Her first husband Eltor P. Bauer, Brothers William (Billy) Demontigny, John Lloyd, Johnny Al, Kenneth, and Daniel Torstenson lastly, her long-time friend Lee St. Croix.
Many people say they have amazing persons welcome them into the family. Ella was one of those people that welcomed anyone at any time. She fed you, made you laugh, and when you left knew you had a piece of her love go with you. Ella is an amazing woman who was exceedingly proud of her family; she is greatly missed.
A big thank you to Elm Crest Manor Staff for the excellent care our mother received throughout her entire stay and especially for the support and care the entire family received during mom’s final days.
