John was raised and went to school in New Salem, ND, through the 11th Grade. His family then moved to Huntley, MT in 1975 and he graduated from Huntley Project High School in 1976. He was active in football and wrestling, competing at state wrestling in both ND & MT. John married Sandra Marsh on July 17th, 1999 in Mandan, ND
John’s first work experience was with his dad grinding livestock feed. He then had various jobs in the oilfield before pursuing his childhood dream of driving truck. He drove a semi cross-country delivering bulk US Mail for nearly 20 years before buying his own semi. He was an owner-operator for a number of years until he broke his back in a fall. At that time, John and Sandie started Hartman, Inc., a load brokerage, at which he worked until his retirement in September 2023.
As a child in New Salem, John spent countless hours finding treasures, such as antique glass bottles, at the town dump. This hobby led him to a lifetime of collecting memorabilia, from stamps and coins to comic books.
John had a sharp mind and great memory that served him well both in his business and his life after disability. He was able to contrive many systems and gadgets that helped him function quite well even with his physical limitations.
After moving to Wilton, John and Sandie became faithful, serving members of the Mission Evangelical Free Church, where his funeral service will be held at 1 pm on Saturday, March 2nd 2024. A viewing will be held from 5pm – 7pm on Friday, March 1st at Bismarck Funeral Home.
