Ruth Amanda Overvold

Ruth Amanda Overvold, 101, longtime Velva area resident, died Wednesday, January 17, 2024 in a Velva nursing care center.

Ruth was born on April 8, 1922 on the family farm near Velva, the daughter of Paul and Birgit (Swenson) Overvold. She attended country school through the eighth grade and graduated from Velva High School in 1941. Ruth furthered her education at Augsburg College for two years, then attended Lutheran Bible Institute for two years, and the Lutheran Deaconess School of Nursing, all in Minneapolis, MN. She graduated in 1950 as a registered nurse. 

Ruth began employment as a registered nurse at the Lutheran Deaconess Hospital in Minneapolis prior to entering the mission field. She worked as a registered nurse in India for five years and Nepal for 26 years. Upon returning to the United States in 1988, she worked at the World Mission Prayer League in Minneapolis. Ruth retired and returned to the Overvold farm north of Velva, ND until moving to Minot. In August 2023, she moved to the Souris Valley Care Center in Velva. 

Ruth was baptized and confirmed at North Prairie Lutheran Church, rural Velva. She was a member of the World Mission Prayer League. Ruth enjoyed computer work in genealogy, reading, walking, gardening, and spending time reading and studying her Bible. 

Ruth is survived by many nieces, nephews and friends. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings: Agnes Overvold, Sigurd Overvold, Paul Overvold, Selma (Roy) Malde, Olav (Helen and Eleanor) Overvold, Klara Overvold, Carl (Marie) Overvold, Sigurd Overvold, Alexander (Dorothy) Overvold, Clara (Stuart) Walker, Pauline (George) Wilson; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. 

Ruth’s family would like to thank her caregivers at Edgewood Vista and the Souris Valley Care Center for their loving care of Ruth.

Memorial Service: Saturday, January 27, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. in Oak Valley Lutheran Church, Velva.  To view a livestream of the service access https://www.mtmsales.net/thomas.
Visitation: Friday, January 26 from 3 until 5:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
