Janice Kleven

Janice Darlene Kleven, 86, Piedmont, SD formerly of Berthold, ND passed away on January 8, 2024 at her home surrounded by her family.

Janice was born December 27, 1937, the daughter of Alfred “Slim” and Bessie Borud, in Minot, North Dakota. She was baptized and confirmed at Rose Valley Lutheran Church in rural Des Lacs, ND. Janice was raised and educated in Des Lacs, ND; she grew up with a family of love and strong faith to pass onto her own family.

Janice was united in marriage to Peter (Pete) Aldo Kleven Jr. on January 1, 1956, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Berthold, ND. Pete worked on the railroad for 43 years. In addition, they farmed, raised cattle, and raced horses for many years. Janice was always busy running kids to activities, and cooking the best meals, including lefse, donuts, and ginger snaps cookies. She had a passion for quilting and shared her talents with family and friends. Janice volunteered for the American Diabetes Association, the church, and Berthold Progressive Club. She loved any holiday, especially Christmas, entertaining and having her family and friends for any occasion. Everyone was always welcome!

Pete and Janice moved to Piedmont, SD in 2015 from their home of 50+ years located south of Lonetree, ND. They have enjoyed the beautiful Black Hills and all the family and friends passing through while avoiding the cold, cold winters on the farm. Over the years, they enjoyed dancing, camping, Hostfest, any polka fest, and attending their grandchildren/great grandchildren’s activities.

Her greatest joys were spending time with family and friends and especially the grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is known to all of us as Ma Kleven.

Ma Kleven was diagnosed with lung cancer in June 2022 and we have been given extra time to have her enjoy more holidays, birthdays, 68 Anniversary years with Pa Pete, the love of her family, hold baby Pozie for hours, and to celebrate Keely’s marriage.  We are so thankful to all the family and friends whom have visited this past year to spend time with Ma and Pa Kleven along with the rest of our family.  Those times have been truly treasured by all of us.

Janice is survived by her husband, Pete and four children, Rick Kleven, Doug (Teresa) Kleven, Tim (Jill) Kleven, Michelle (Tim) Peterson; seven grandchildren, Samantha (Brandon) Blomberg, Casondra (Casee) Seibert, Jeff Kleven (Brent Bode), Riley Kleven, Garrett (Jori) Peterson, Cydney Peterson, and Keely (Tucker) Overland;  great grandchildren, Scarlett, Grayson, and Baby Blomberg, Ridge, Ryler and Pozie Peterson,  Special friend of family, Lucy Heisinger. Siblings, Marvel (Ernie) Lenertz, Arlo (Faye) Borud, Larry Borud, Leon (Linda) Borud, Karen Rath (Jerry) Martin, Marlene (Lynn) Grabow; sister-in-law Sheryl Borud, brother-in-law Archie (Marlene) Kleven, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
